Frozen Waves Known As ‘Slurpee Waves’ Spotted in Massachusetts
Slurpee Waves, as they are called, are not only enchanting and marvelous but they are also a rare occurrence. You’d be lucky if you caught it once in a lifetime, as stated by Glaciologist Erin Pettit of the University of Alaska Fairbanks who told the New York Times that she’s never seen anything like it before as the turbulent water usually breaks up the ice.
However, photographer and surfer Jonathan Nimerfroh was lucky enough to witness this phenomenon twice, once in February 2015 and again this year in January 2018 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
At -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 degrees Fahrenheit) the ocean begins to freeze, on that day the ocean’s temperature was -11 degrees Celsius (12 degrees Fahrenheit). At these temperatures, ice crystals begin to form in the ocean waves.
The occurrence is rapid that the ice waves melt in just a few hours.
